Transfers and how to use them to your advantage!

Transfer from one bus for free!  If you must use two bus routes to get to your destination, you can make use of our free transfers. Transfers are intended to get you to your one-way-trip destination without paying for a double fare.

Here are a couple of examples of how to use it.
  1. Hunter to Hudson: "Yup, you will need to transfer"
    1. Let's say you are starting your trip in the Village of Hunter and you would like to go to Hudson.  You will pay your $3.00 fare on the bus in Hunter and tell your driver that you would like to go to Hudson.  Your driver will make arrangements for a transfer from your starting bus to meet the 711 bus so that you can go to your destination in Hudson. The driver will write you a transfer pass and let you know when to depart that bus to catch your next bus.  Before you exit the bus, be sure that you know exactly where to wait for the second bus to complete your trip.   Your driver will let you know where and what time the intersecting bus will pick you up. You can let your driver know that you intend on taking that bus home in the afternoon so that they are aware.
      1.  If you are unsure what time you will need to meet the bus for your return trip, just ask your driver or call Greene County Transit for help.
    2. When you are ready to return from Hudson, you will pay $3.00 to the bus in Hudson and the transfer will be given to you for entry to the second bus that will get you back to the Village of Hunter.   Make sure you plan for your connecting bus home by planning out the time that your buses will connect.  Be aware that some Routes only make 2 trips per day and you don't want to miss it.
  2. New Baltimore to Cairo:"Yup, you will need to transfer in this case, as well"
    1. Let's say you are starting your trip from New Baltimore and you would like to get to Cairo.  Well, that's easy, here is how you can do it.  Route 701 will pick you up in New Baltimore, you will pay your fare for $3.00 and let your driver know that you would like to go to Cairo.  Your driver will write your transfer pass and call the driver of the nearest route that intersects with the 701 bus and make the arrangement for your transfer.   You can let your driver know that you intend on taking that bus home in the afternoon so that they are aware.  Your driver of Route 701 will let you know where and what time the intersecting bus will pick you up.  If you are unsure or have questions, just ask the driver for more information.
      1. As long as you are in the exact location of where your first driver told you where to meet the second bus, the next bus will pick you up.  Watch for the second bus to arrive and hop on.  Just remember to show the transfer pass to the second driver, once he/she has approved it, you can deposit it in the farebox and enjoy the rest of your ride.
    2. When you are ready for your return trip, you will go to a stop location of the last bus that you were on.  When the bus arrives, pay your $3.00 and let your driver know that you will need to transfer to the bus that will take you back to New Baltimore.  The driver will write your pass and (again) let you know where and when to meet the connecting bus.  The driver will let you know when it is time to get off the bus to make your connection to get you on the second bus home. When you reach your destination in New Baltimore, you can pull the stop cord to make the driver aware of your departure.
Still confused or have questions?  Give us a call and I know we can help!

Plan your trip ahead of time and be prepared to have cash or a valid pass.  Look at the route that stops at your location and intersects with the route that you will need to make at the transfer point.  Make sure you know what time the last two buses can get you back to your starting point.  If you need any assistance making your plans, give us a call and we can help you have a successful trip.

There are rules to this free opportunity.
The transfer spot will enable you to get on the bus within the time frame of the valid transfer.  That way you will spend the least amount of time waiting for the second bus.
  • The transfer spot will be determined by the drivers of both runs and/or GCT Dispatch.
  • A transfer will only be written for the next available bus.
  • A transfer cannot be used as a return trip fare.
  • A transfer can only be used to complete a one-way-trip.
  • A transfer cannot be used for a destination that you can get to by using only one bus.
  • A transfer is only valid for the bus route, pickup time and date that it has been created for.
  • A transfer can only be used by the person it was created for.
  • A transfer can only be used one time and must be shown to the driver of the second bus and deposited in the farebox.
If you are still unsure and would like to use this service, just give us a call and we can help you.  Call Greene County Transit at: (518) 943-3625.
Misuse of a transfer is considered theft of services and will be prosecuted as such.
